Six fire crews tackled a blaze at a Barrow crematorium.

Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service was called at around 7.55pm on Thursday, March 26, to Thorncliffe Crematorium on Devonshire Road.

There were reports of smoke coming from the building.

Six fire engines from Barrow, Ulverston, Walney and Millom, a turntable ladder and two officers, attended the scene.

Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service said: “Crews worked quickly to bring the situation under control.

“The fire has been confirmed as accidental and caused damage to part of the roof.

“We are working closely with Westmorland and Furness Council while follow-up work is carried out to provide reassurance to the local community.

“We appreciate this will be a difficult and upsetting time for those affected. Our thoughts are with those families impacted, and we thank the public for their patience and understanding.”
