Significant games in Cumberland County League

The Cumberland County League had a number of mid-week games, with one in particular significant in the Premier Division’s relegation battle.

Wigton Harriers picked up an important point in a 0-0 draw at neighbours Aspatria as they battle with Keswick to see who stays in the top flight.

Incredibly this was Wigton’s ninth draw in 16 league games, and with just two left they lead Keswick by nine points. The Fitz Park club haven’t given up as they have four games to play.

The other Premier Division game saw Mirehouse win 3-2 at Cockermouth to keep alive their hopes of finishing runners-up to Unisun Athletic.

They had led 3-1 at half-time with goals from Robbie Swinburn (2) and Bradley Colaluca and although Cockermouth pulled one back they couldn’t find an equaliser. Oscar Pickering and Luke Graham netter for the home side.

There was a hard-fought semi-final tie in the Benevolent Cup and it had to be settled by penalties after a 0-0 draw.

Maryport Athletic will now meet Mirehouse in the final after this shoot-out success against Workington Juniors.

Both sides had opportunities to win it during the 90 minutes but neither could fashion a goal.

Maryport keeper Craig Rule was the hero with a penalty save as Ciaran Booty, Logan Bosward, Cam Herker, Ellis Short and Ciaran Laverty all scored from the spot in a 5-4 decider.

There were two games in the Whitehaven Cup, which is on a group basis to start with and there were wins for Unisun Athletic and Whitehaven Miners.

Unisun beat their own Development side 7-0 with goals from James-Lee Reynolds (2), Kingsley Grandison, Dave Nelson, Tom McDonald, Ellis Dickinson and Shane Dorward.

The Miners were given a good test by Windscale reserves before winning 2-1 with goals from Alex Parr and Alpha Yayah. Kian Hoey countered for Windscale.

In a Division One game Miners Development side beat Cockermouth reserves with a goal from Calvin Rowel.

Fixtures tomorrow are:

  • Premier Division – Cockermouth v Workington Juniors; Unisun Athletic v Maryport Athletic.
  • Division One – Bransty Rangers v Silloth; Whitehaven Miners Development v Northbank.
  • Whitehaven Cup – Dearham United v Cockermouth reserves; Keswick v Mirehouse.
  • League Cup – Wigton Harriers v Cleator Moor Celtic reserves.
