Police recovered a monkey from the boot of a car on the M6 near Carlisle.
The marmoset was discovered by officers at around 6.30pm on Wednesday.
Two people have been arrested.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of drug driving and driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition and a passenger was arrested on suspicion of illegal possession of a primate.
It is understood that the monkey will be transferred to Monkey World in Dorset.
