New speed limits will be introduced on the £23.3 million A595 Grizebeck scheme in South Cumbria.
The scheme is creating a new single carriageway road between Grizebeck village and Chapels.
Westmorland and Furness Council was awarded the cash by the Department for Transport in 2024 to go towards the project.
The council said the work was designed to improve safety, journey times and resilience along one of Cumbria’s key transport routes.
Proposals were put forward to introduce updated speed limits to the new section and surrounding roads.
The authority’s South Lakeland Locality Board was asked to consider the introduction of:
- 40mph along parts of the A595
- 20mph along the C5013
- 20mph along the C5014 Buckthorn Lane
- 20mph along the U5985, which is the former A595 that has been reclassified
- 40mph along a different part of the C5014 Buckthorn Lane
There would also be double yellow lines on the former A595 and prohibition of motor vehicles orders – except for access – for the C5013 and C5014 Buckthorn Lane.
Chair Councillor Suzanne Pender (Lib Dems, Coniston and Hawkshead), said it was really great to see the proposals coming to council, and congratulated local members for their ‘great work’ in getting it through.
Councillor Matt Brereton (Cons, High Furness) said members of the public had raised concerns that the speed limit on the new A595 changed from 40mph to 60mph and back to 40mph and stressed that speeds on the road should be monitored.
Though Cllr Brereton did acknowledge that speed cameras have been built into the new road, and said that the council may decide further down the line that a 50mph speed limit may be preferable to the national speed limit, as a consultant had raised.
Councillors agreed the new speed limits
