Whitehaven drew for the second week in a row to continue their end-of-season improvement.
It’s probably an indication of their progress as a team that manager Brian Dawson was a little disappointed they hadn’t got all three points.
Poulton are a good, solid West Lancashire League side so the result will still boost Whitehaven ahead of Tuesday’s local derby at Cleator Moor.
They produced some of their best football of the season in the first 30 minutes but left the back door open for Tyler Hallan to open the scoring on 12 minutes.
There was a positive response from the home side and they were quickly level.
Alfie McDonaugh went down the left and a wicked cross caused so many problems it was bundled into the net by a Poulton defender.
Whitehaven continued to dominate and deservedly went ahead when Joe Carney finished well on 25 minutes when presented with an opportunity.
However the Cumbrians conceded a soft equaliser when a long ball over the top was collected by Raedan Shirran who lifted the ball over the advancing keeper.
The second half was quite cagey and it was Poulton who went ahead on 80 minutes when the referee awarded them a penalty which Hallan put away.
But Whitehaven stormed back on five minutes from time Luke Routledge was at the far post to convert a cross and earn his side the point.
You can hear what manager Brian Dawson thought about the game below:
Cleator Moor Celtic gave another good performance at home to CMB but were beaten 1-0.
It’s been a number of games in a row now when Celtic have played well, been dominant for good periods of games and created chances, but unable to finish them off.
Celtic were good all around the pitch except the final third and had created three good chances before CMB got the breakthrough on 27 minutes.
They didn’t deal with a long throw and CMB got in to score what proved the winner from Carl Grimshaw.
The second half was much of the same with Zack Martin, Jamie Martin and Leon Dymstrowski all going close to getting Celtic back on terms.
You can hear below what manager Gareth Agnew thought about the game:
Millom travelled to Blackpool Wren Rovers and after pulling level slipped to a 3-1 defeat.
The home side had taken 38th minute lead through Rob Hanslip and two minutes into the second half Harry Cowley pulled the south Cumbrians level.
Rovers went on to win it with goals from Danny Fletcher (63) and Tarren Moxon (87).
Two first-half goals from Robbie Mooring (3) and Zach Clarke (25) gave Milnthorpe Corinthians a 2-0 home win over Astley and Buckshaw United.
