Carlisle’s Southern Link Road is due to be officially opened in June.
Cumberland Council said it was one of the biggest infrastructure projects in the area for many years.
It said significant progress had been made in recent months. Permanent surfacing has been completed along the route, and white lines have now been applied.
Final road signs are also being installed.
The project has now entered the snagging phase, which allows the project team to carry out detailed inspections and address any final issues.
It will officially open at 10am on Friday June 12 and the road will open to traffic that afternoon.
Two sculptures at the Mare and Foal roundabout at Durdar and the Limousin Bull at Brisco roundabout have now been successfully installed.
They were created by Ellie Barden, of Grace Forge in Penrith to celebrate the area’s rural heritage.
Mark Fryer, leader of Cumberland Council, said: “This vital scheme, funded through Homes England, will bring long‑term benefits for residents, businesses and the local economy by improving connectivity and easing congestion.
“I would like to thank everyone involved in delivering this complex project, and in particular the local community for their patience and understanding while the works have been carried out. We are now very close to seeing this important new route open for public use.”
- Cumberland Council said it was aware that residents and businesses have raised questions about traffic cones remaining in place in some locations. It said although public traffic was currently using parts of the new road, the site was still under the control of the contractor and was still classed as a construction site, which is why traffic cones and speed limit restrictions remained in place.
