Work to demolish West Cumbrian park cafe building to start

Work to demolish a West Cumbrian park’s cafe building is set to start next week.

Workington Town Council said the building, in Vulcan Park, was unsafe.

Demolition work is due to begin on Monday.

The council said all work would be carried out within the fencing around the cafe, but urged people to take care around the site.

It said it had explored options for the site but structural surveys and specialist asbestos assessments confirmed that the building was unsafe and could not be viably repaired.

Councillor Mike Rollo, chair of Workington Town Council’s finance & general purposes committee, said: “We have investigated several options for the site and looked at what the implications would be for the local taxpayer.

“The council is committed to protecting public money and giving back to the community.

“Other options would mean the council would need to secure a substantial amount of funding or an increase in the precept and did not feel this was an effective use of community money.

“The council is in the process of investigating facilities that could be added to this area, which have been requested by the public and we will provide an update as soon as possible.”
