West Cumbrian village road to close for improvement work

A West Cumbrian village road is set to close overnight for improvement work.

Cumberland Council said the work will begin this evening on the C4001 which runs through Lowca, near Whitehaven, and is expected to take one night, subject to weather conditions.

Work on the road will be carried out between 7pm and will last until 6am and the road will be fully closed with diversions in place where required.

Throughout the works, full access will be maintained for emergency service vehicles under blue or green light conditions, as well as for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists.

Waste and recycling collections will continue as normal. Information about any temporary bus stop relocations will be displayed at affected stops.

Passengers are encouraged to contact Stagecoach directly for route-specific queries.

The closure is part of the Lowca NCN Route 72 Active Travel Scheme, that aims to enhance the local road network and support safer journeys.

The scheme includes road network and drainage repairs, the installation of a new crossing to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety, upgrades to street lighting, cycle route improvements, and the reinstatement and enhancement of road markings.

It is hoped the measures will improve safety for road users while strengthening local active travel routes with funding from the Walk Wheel Cycle Trust and National Highways.

A council spokesman said: “Cumberland Council recognises that the C4001 Lowca is an important local route and that some temporary inconvenience may occur while the works are carried out.

“The council is working closely with local stakeholders, including Parish Councils and local members, to minimise disruption wherever possible.

“Cumberland Council would like to thank the community for their continued patience and support while these essential improvements are delivered and apologises for any inconvenience caused.”
