A tall ship is set to visit West Cumbria this summer.

The Nao Santa Maria is a replica of the ship that Christopher Columbus sailed to the Americas in 1492.

It will visit Whitehaven from July 20 until August 10, and people will be able to buy tickets for tours from 10am until 8pm daily.

The ship is visiting as part of its historical outreach tour – which will see it visit 30 locations overseas.

Visitors will be able to explore the ship’s interior, discover life on board in the 15th century and learn more about Christopher Columbus’ voyage.

Built in around 2018 by Spanish shipwrights using traditional 15th century methods, the ship is a floating museum managed by the Fundacion Nao Victora.

The visit to Whitehaven has been made possible by Whitehaven Town Council, Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners, Sellafield Ltd, Amentum, Jennings, Delkia and Cavendish Nuclear.
