West Cumbrian construction firm on track to celebrate £10 million milestone

A West Cumbrian construction firm is on track to hit a £10 million milestone.

William King Construction said it was on course to reach £10m annual turnover this year.

Set up by William and Lisa King almost 20 years ago as a small brickwork business, the company has grown to become one of the major contractors in the county, employing over 100 people.

It has just moved into new offices at Westlakes Science Park, at Moor Row, near Whitehaven, as it enters a new phase of growth.

As part of its evolution and ambition to continue to expand, William and Lisa will take a more strategic role in the business and the senior leadership team will lead day-to-day operations.

Shawn Ackerlay now heads the operational delivery of the company.

The company works across residential, commercial and nuclear sectors.

It has recently joined Cumberland Council Capital Works Framework, a four-year approved contractor list for the authority.

It gives William King Construction the chance to bid for contracts worth up to £3m and the authority access to trusted local contractors.

William King Construction also continues to play a key role in supporting major projects through the Programme and Project Partners framework at Sellafield.

PPP is the construction delivery partner for Sellafield’s multi-billion-pound infrastructure and hazard reduction programme, bringing together leading contractors and specialist supply chain partners to deliver critical projects safely and efficiently.

Cat Davies-McChesney, PPP social impact lead, said: “It is fantastic to see a company so rooted in the local economy flourish and grow.

“It is particularly heartening to see William King Construction’s dedication to the local community and their passion in supporting young people who may have disengaged from education, to discover their own potential and pursue routes into meaningful employment.”

William King Construction also said it remained committed to investing in local people.

Its Aspire Academy, a community interest company, provides practical skills training and opportunities for young people who may otherwise face barriers to employment.

William said: “When we started the business, I never imagined the scale it would reach.

“What I’m most proud of isn’t the turnover figure – it’s the people behind it. We’ve built a fantastic team of local people who care about quality, care about each other, and care about the communities we work in.

“This milestone belongs to every member of our team, past and present.

“The move to Westlakes Science Park and the strength of our leadership team gives us a platform for the next stage of our journey.”

Michael Pemberton, chief executive of BEC, which manages Westlakes Science Park, said: “Westlakes Science Park is home to a wide range of innovative businesses that are growing, creating skilled jobs and making a positive contribution to the local economy, and William King Construction is a great example of that.

“We’re delighted to welcome William and his growing team to the park and look forward to seeing them build new relationships and opportunities with other occupiers, particularly across the energy, engineering and nuclear sectors.”
