Appleby has been given £1,750 by the contractor working on the town’s flood scheme on behalf of the Environment Agency.
VolkerStevin donated the cash as part of its commitment to giving back to the areas in which it works.
A donation of £1,500 supported community Walk & Talk sessions, delivered with Carlisle and Eden Mind, and a support group for parents and carers of children with special educational needs.
VolkerStevin also donated £250-worth of plants and flowers to enhance the Cumbria in Bloom award winning outdoor space outside Appleby Hub, next to the flood scheme’s construction work.
Jane Farkins, of Appleby Hub, said: “The kind donation from VolkerStevin and the EA helped fund our Walk & Talk sessions with Carlisle and Eden Mind, as well as our support group for parents and carers of children with SEN.
“These sessions are much needed within Appleby and the surrounding areas. They were initially launched with funding from Natural England and are now supported by The National Lottery Community Fund.”
VolkerStevin project manager, Sam Calder said: “We’re proud to support the communities where we deliver our work.
“Initiatives like this demonstrate our commitment to creating lasting social value and ensuring we leave a positive impact that extends beyond the completion of our projects.”
The donation forms part of a wider commitment by the Environment Agency and its contractors to deliver lasting community benefits alongside the flood scheme.
Meanwhile the Environment Agency has provided additional parking while the building of a new pumping station continues.
The temporary, free car park has been created on the site of the former Edenside Care Home, with the Oaklea Trust, and will remain open until construction work is completed at Broad Close car park.
