Cyclists brave bad weather for exciting racing in Carlisle

The senior podium at the Carlisle circuit – Richard Davidson (2nd), Ed Hindmarsh (1st) and John Woodhouse (3rd).

Plenty of young riders braved the strong winds and darkening skies at Carlisle Cycle Circuit for the latest meeting.

They included a good number of first time racers, all of whom made an excellent effort and rode very well.

Winners included Scottish siblings Skye, Cobey and Josh Stewart, Martha Pugh from Hexham, Clydesdale Colts rider Zoe Martin and local riders Oliver Nichol and Mieke and Wesley van Schelven.

David McIntyre of Clydesdale Colts deserves special mention as he bounced back from a nasty crash at the weekend to win the Under-10s boys’ race.

The weather was deteriorating by the time the adult race for category 2,3 and 4 riders began.

Despite the increasing winds the initial pace was high and Wolf Cycles’ rider Ed Hindmarsh put the rest of the bunch under pressure by making a solo attack early in the race.

Initially a cohesive bunch mounted a chase but this eventually fragmented and the race became an attritional affair with several riders falling by the wayside thanks to a combination of the wind and Hindmarsh’s dogged determination.

Spectators wondered if he had attacked too soon and would tire before the end of the race but he dug deep and took first place by a clear margin.

Muckle CC’s Richard Davidson won the sprint for second place with John Woodhouse, of Kendal CC, rounding out the podium.
