Listen: Speedway’s Barry Collins on Jay Cartmell Memorial meeting

Barry Collins first started watching the Workington Comets in 1999 when the sport came back to Derwent Park.

He’s followed the team and the sport even since, dismayed when they dropped out after such a successful season in 2018 and then delighted when they were reborn at Northside in 2023.

Barry has also earned enough respect to be trusted with the team manager’s job when James Denham was unavailable and he’s also boss of the young Meteors team who compete in the Northern Junior League.

He’s got another role today at the GT Arena when he acts as co-ordinator for the very special memorial meeting for Jay Cartmell.

Barry – better known as Baz – has been talking to Cumbria Crack’s John Walsh about the meeting this afternoon, the speedway talent who are putting themselves in the shop window, the young riders who have their own competition as well and the return of a Comets legend tonight:
