The HRA’s Whitehaven Area hosted a four grade meeting at Cold Fell where 59 hounds turned out.
Six of those were in the opening senior race where Ruth and Charlie Dixons I Am It, currently trained by Gary and Misha Byers led them out along with James and Ava McLellan’s Baroness Ava.
Showing on the top of the fell Denise and Jenny Bland and Ella and Kyle Gallacher’s Jenny’s Chance was leading from Stephen Irving and Caroline Graham’s Zoya, followed by Geoff and Gillian Higgins’ Lucky Lottie and Baroness Ava.
Going into the gully Jenny’s Chance was still leading but this time from Baroness Ava, Lucky Lottie and Zoya.
Going out of sight at the far end Jenny’s Chance and Zoya had a 50 yards lead on Baroness Ava who in turn was 50 yards ahead of Lucky Lottie.
On the top of the fell before they drop into the bottoms onto the finish Jenny’s Chance showed with 10 yards on Baroness Ava, Lucky Lottie and Zoya.
However dropping down it was Lucky Lottie who gained an advantage and managed to hold onto the lead all the way up to the line where she won and lost her maiden status, ahead of fast finishing Zoya and Baroness Ava.
Jenny’s Chance finished fourth and the final ticket went to Lisa and Holly Whitfield’s Lucky Breeze.
I Am It, the early leader, was the only one not to finish.
The Pups had 13 taking part with Martin and Molly Burrow, Ian Freyne, Ger and Jennifer Kenneally’s Thorn Daisy the one who led them away.
Duncan, Amy, Oliver, Liam, Eleanor Chisholm, Harry Turner and Brian Graham’s Let Me Try Again and Nicola McMaster and Barbara Telford’s Rodney Ranger were also prominent.
Going through the fell and into the gully Let Me Try Again had got to the front from Anthony, Steph, Sophie, Katie and Alfie Steele and Roy Laidler’s Miterdale Sauvage, Rodney Ranger and Thorn Daisy.
Right there, too, were Tony, Marlene, Connor and Carter Irving and Gary Woodend’s Bewley with Sadie, Kessi and Graham Wilson’s Cinderella back in sixth but eying up the leading hounds.
On the top of the fell dropping into the bottoms Let Me Try Again was leading from Rodney Ranger but the former ran off again and coming out of the sieves Rodney Ranger finished well to claim the win ahead of Bewley and Let Me Try Again.
Cinderella had improved into fourth ahead of Miterdale Sauvage with the final ticket going to Ruth and Charlie Dixon’s What Is It.
The Open Maidens were next to go with 23 lined up to go.
Ruth and Charlie Dixon’s Is It It, currently trained by Denise and Jenny Bland, was prominent with Colin Satterthwaite’s Thorn Pop and Ian Fleet’s High Crag.
Going through the fell Colin Satterthwaite’s pair of Thorn Heart and Thorn Pop were going hell for leather leading the race well and being chased by Is It It; Tracey, Carolyn and Derrick Hill’s Degsy Moon and Joseph Abram and Claire Crone’s Silver Girl.
Dropping down the fell Is It It, Thorn Pop and Silver Girl had an advantage and coming out of the sieves it was another good race to the line.
In the end it was the pup Is It It who got there to claim the win over another youngster Silver Girl.
Thorn Pop took third from Geoff and Gillian Higgins’ Lucky Moon and Degsy Moon.
Marti and Amy Borthwick’s Castle Callant claimed the final ticket.
The final race of the night was for the Open Restricted with a slip of 17.
Malcom Holmes’ Senor and Graham Reid’s Money Talks were the early leaders along with Christine Brownlee’s Malia.
Going through the fell and into the gully Senor was still leading away well with Sarah White’s Malfunction, Money Talks and Raymond and Glenis Farren and Denise Bland’s Miss Becky.
On the top of the fell, dropping into the bottoms Senor was still leading and he maintained the lead all the way up to the line where he won tidily from Malfunction and Money Talks.
Miss Becky finished in fourth ahead of Sophie Steele, Jake and Zach Green’s Miterdale Green Queen and Brian and Erin Rowlandson and the late Billy Birkett’s Blue Striker.
