Workington Comets suffered a heavy defeat at champions Poole Pirates last night, sunk with little trace by the reigning championship title holders.
They might have had an inkling of what might be coming after losing 51-39 at home on Saturday night.
A chastening 61-29 defeat at Wimborne Road meant that Poole won the aggregate point by a massive 112-68.
In a miserable meeting for the Comets they only had four heat winners and their only heat maximum came in the penultimate race of the night.
Tate Zischke won it and guest Michael Cluff beat former Comet Luke Harrison for third place to register the 4-2.
But it was a relentless power show by the Pirates who had five heat maximums in the first eight races along with a couple of 4-2’s and a shared heat.
The Workington heat wins were recorded by Jonas Jeppesen, Drew Kemp, Zischke and Troy Batchelor.
Former Comet Richard Lawson (13) and Zach Cook (12) were the Poole spearheads but there were solid points right through the rest of the riders.
The Comets score-chart was much more lopsided with Jeppesen almost ploughing a lone furrow on 13 – with Zischke next on six.
Even Vinnie Foord, on a return to his old track managed only a single point as his four-ride record included an exclusion and a retirement.
The Comets desperately need to get back to winning ways and they have the chance on Saturday when they host Edinburgh Monarchs at Northside with a 6pm start.
