The Haweswater Aqueduct being built

People can find out about the progress on the major revamp of Haweswater Aqueduct at a drop-in session next month.

United Utilities and Cascade Infrastructure will begin work to replace six tunnel sections of the aqueduct later this year.

The 110km aqueduct carries water from Cumbria to 2.5 million customers in Lancashire and Greater Manchester,

The original pipeline, which is now 70 years old, uses gravity to carry 570 million litres of water – nearly 250 Olympic-sized swimming pools – every day to customers and businesses across the North West.

A new tunnel will be built between Old Hutton and Mansergh. Work to create compounds at either end of the tunnel will get underway in November.

Matt Postlethwaite, United Utilities engagement lead for the Haweswater Aqueduct Resilience Programme, known as HARP, said: “HARP is one of the largest water infrastructure programmes in the UK. As well as securing water supplies for millions of customers, it will also create hundreds of jobs in the region.

“Keeping communities along the route informed is important to us and our delivery partners at Cascade Infrastructure.

“We are inviting residents in the rural communities between Kirkby Lonsdale and Sedbergh to come along to meet the team and find out more.”

The information session is being held from 10am to 7pm on Wednesday August 5 at Killington Parish Hall.
