Free health MOT event to help local people get the best care

stethoscope[A] free health MOT drop in event is being hosted on 28th April, 9.30am – 2.30pm, by Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (CPFT) in the newly refurbished Whitehaven Library.

The event will bring together NHS services and third sector providers who can give members of the public advice and information about specific health problems as well as provide free health and fitness checks and walking aid reviews.

Maureen Canigiani, from St Bees, came to the same event last year to get advice for her mother who had suffered a severe stroke in 2011. She said the advice she was given was life changing:

Maureen said: “I decided to go to the event at the last minute, and I’m so glad I did because it has changed our lives. After mum’s stroke, I wanted some more information about what help she could get and what was available locally but I didn’t know where to start. Everyone on the day was so helpful and gave me advice about what could help mum’s recovery.”

“I found out exactly what I needed to do to get the best support for mum and she now meets regularly with a Physiotherapist and an Occupational Therapist and goes to a local Speech after Stroke club every week. Going along to the event was the best thing I ever did and the change in my mum has been brilliant.”

Vicky Johnston, CPFT Specialist Physiotherapist based at West Cumberland Hospital, said: “This event is a great opportunity for us to join up with other teams and organisations so local people can get all the information they need in one place. We’re really excited to get back out into the community and give support and advice that can make a real difference to people’s health and well-being.”

Staff from CPFT’s Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Dietetics, Memory Matters, Pulmonary and Cardiac Rehabilitation departments will be attending the event as well as third party organisations including West Cumbria Carers, Alzheimer’s Society and Age UK West Cumbria.
