[C]umbria County Council has announced that works to reconstruct and improve the road surface of Homewood Road and Overend Road in Whitehaven have begun, and can confirm a rough schedule for the duration of the works.

These works are weather dependant, and the council is very grateful to the local community, local businesses and the West Cumberland Hospital for their input, support, patience and understanding.  These works are designed to ensure the long term improved condition of this key community facility.

The works will be completed in four phases, as follows:

Monday 17 July – Accommodation works begin on two access roads to the hospital estate – anticipated duration of one week.

Monday 24 July – Phase 1 begins – road closure between A595 and entrance to Homewood Road staff car park.  Access to hospital maintained via Overend Road.  Anticipated duration of Phase 1 works is 23 days.

Thursday 3 August – works taking place outside entrance to Homewood Road staff car park.  The car park will be closed completely from 7.30am on Thursday 3 August, scheduled to re-open Sunday 6 August.

Wednesday 16 August – Phase 2 begins – road closure from current entrance to hospital one way system (current exit will become two-way temporarily). Anticipated duration of Phase 2 is 42 days – this phase will be completed in three sections. The first section will end just below the entrance to Sneckyeat Road to allow access to the industrial estate and staff car park.  Access to the hospital maintained via A595.

Tuesday 29 August – Phase 2 second section commences – road closure from Sneckyeat Road to Richmond Hill Road.  Access to the industrial estate and hospital staff car park will be maintained, and access to the hospital site will be via the A595.

Saturday 9 September – Phase 2 third and final section commences – road closure on Sneckyeat Road, the staff car park on the industrial estate will be closed over the weekend to allow for works at the entrance to the estate, re-opening on Monday 11 September. Access to hospital site maintained via A595.

Wednesday 27 September – Phase 3 begins – road closure from Richmond Hill junction – Muncaster Road. Anticipated duration of Phase 3 is 13 days. Access to hospital via A595.

Monday 9 October – Phase 4 begins – road closure from Muncaster Road – Cleator Moor Road (B5295). Anticipated duration of Phase 4 is 13 days. Access to hospital via A595.

Stagecoach bus services will continue to run, however notices will be posted on stops which are temporarily out of action due to road closures, advising passengers of the nearest alternative stop.
