Carlisle Library will reopen next month following a £3.3 million revamp.
It will reopen on Tuesday August 4 after the revamp, funded by the Government’s Carlisle Town Deal and Cumberland Council.
The project included significant structural work, rewiring, infrastructure upgrades and the installation of new technology and facilities.
The new facilities include a children’s zone, social areas, adult learning classrooms and dedicated study spaces with private desks and charging points.
It will also house the Jackson Collection, which features thousands of rare and historic items dating back to the 1600s.
The authority said a revised opening date allowed the final stages of the project to be completed.
Alison Graham, assistant director of customer solutions at Cumberland Council, said: “We know many residents are looking forward to returning to Carlisle Library and discovering everything the transformed building has to offer.
“This investment is about much more than improving a building. We’ve created a modern, accessible and welcoming space where people can borrow books, gain new skills, access digital services, continue their learning journey and connect with others in their community.
“Libraries play a vital role at the heart of our communities, supporting people at every stage of life. Whether you’re visiting with your family, studying for exams, exploring local history, developing new skills through adult learning or simply enjoying a good book, Carlisle Library will be a place for life and learning.”
The library project is part of Carlisle’s wider £19.7 million Town Deal Investment Plan, which is also delivering the Carlisle Southern Gateway project and enhancements at Tullie.
During the refurbishment, library services have operated from a temporary location on the third floor of the current building, which is accessible via Level three of The Lanes car park.
