West Cumbrian cat goes on goggle stealing spree

A thieving feline has gone on a goggle stealing spree in West Cumbria.

Gina Goldwater, 48, of Hensingham, near Whitehaven, said her son’s five-year-old moggy Sett, has been bringing home underwater eyewear on and off for the past two years.

In the past few weeks, he’s brought three pairs back to their home on Lincoln Road, two of which have been new.

Gina, who is a veterinary nurse, said: “Last summer, there was a couple of pairs of goggles brought into the house, but we blamed his sister Vanellope.

“But this year, about two weeks ago the first pair were brought into the house and they were all cracked and smashed so I just binned them.

“I think it was the end of last week that he brought a brand new pink pair into the house.”

Gina said she knew her neighbours has a swimming pool, so she went to see them in the hopes of returning the goggles.

She added: “I went and asked them and they were gobsmacked a cat had pinched them.

“But they were very grateful to get them back! I just said I’m so sorry, the cat is stupid, please forgive me and they giggled. And then last night he brought a brand new pair of green and black ones in.

“He just walks in and dumps them in front of you!”

Gina said she hasn’t yet been able to reunite the green and black pair of goggles to their owner.

She added: “I’ve tried a few doors around me but it wasn’t theirs, so I thought I’d post it on Facebook because some kid might be missing their goggles and wanting to go swimming.

“But we haven’t found the owner yet!”

Gina said she thinks Sett is stealing goggles as he is not a very good hunter.

She added: “I have no idea why he’s bringing goggles! He’s not a very good hunter, he can catch flies and leaves and that’s it!

“I’m guessing because it’s an inanimate object and he likes the feel of rubber, that that is why he is catching them for us and bringing them home.”

Sett is a tabby and white domestic long hair cat, that Gina took in with her son from West Cumbria Cat Rehab.

She added: “He is very random, if there’s a cardboard box he’ll go on the top of the mantelpiece and dive headfirst into the box and hit his head off the floor.

“That’s probably why he’s stealing goggles!”

Gina said she posted Sett’s most recent pair of stolen goggles to social media to hopefully find the owner – and warn others of his antics.

She added: “Don’t leave your goggles lying around! When you’re finished in your swimming pool, take them in the house!”
