[A] 21-day extension to the emergency closure of Bailey Lane footpath crossing in Grange-over-Sands, Cumbria, has been granted by Cumbria County Council.
Network Rail originally closed the crossing for 21 days on Thursday 13 July after two members of the public were nearly struck by a train. The couple continued crossing even after the train driver sounded the horn and put on the emergency breaks.
The extension of the closure by another 21 days gives Network Rail more time to evaluate the best and safest way to protect the public when they cross the railway in Grange-over-Sands.
The busy crossing, which sits on the line between Carnforth and Barrow-in-Furness, sees around 50 trains per day travelling over it at speeds of up to 50mph.
Mark Killick, Network Rail’s chief operations officer for the railway in Cumbria, said: “After the near miss incident between the couple and the train, we have taken this step to help keep local people safe at this crossing while we assess all options are available to us.
“The safety of passengers and everyone who comes into contact with the railway is our top priority. We are keen to improve safety at this location and will continue discussions with the local council to try and find a permanent solution to this issue.”
