[U]llswater Steamers have raised £750 to support the important work of the RSPB, thanks to Red Deer Cruises run in partnership with the nature conservation charity, and the public are encouraged to take part in this year’s exciting events.

On Monday 4 September, in a ceremony held at Howton Pier on Ullswater, representatives from Ullswater Steamers met with the RSPB to present the cheque for the money raised on last summer’s events.

The cruises, which have been held every October since 2010 focus on the one of nature’s finest spectacles – the red deer rut at Martindale. Setting sail from Glenridding, they head to Howtown where participants are transferred by minibus to Martindale, to witness the UK’s largest land mammal in action.

Annabel Rushton, Communications Manager from the RSPB said: “We’d like to say a big thank you to Ullswater Steamers and everyone who has attended these cruises. Not only do all those who come along have a fantastic time watching the impressive red deer, but the money raised by these events supports our vitally important nature conservation work to help more threatened wildlife. We’re excited about this year’s upcoming cruises and look forward to bringing people closer to this phenomenal autumn spectacle.”

Lisa Braithwaite, Attractions Marketing Manager from Ullswater ‘Steamers’ said: “We are delighted to work in partnership with the RSPB on our Red Deer Cruises. Raising money for their conservation work is hugely important to us, as well as helping to educate our customers on the local wildlife. The red deer rut is incredible to witness and we can’t wait for this year’s events taking place in October.”

This autumn’s cruises are taking place from Thursday 5 October-Sunday 8 October. They depart from Glenridding at 10.30am, returning at approximately 3.30pm. Adults cost £16 (RSPB member adults £14) and children are half the adult prices. Booking in advance and early is advisable, as these tickets are limited.
