[S]tudents at Central Academy have been supporting Carlisle Foodbank by collecting donations of food items.
Representatives have visited the Academy to take part in 3 year group assemblies designed to help students understand the role of foodbanks in the community, and how these rely on donations from the public.
Students and staff have been donating tinned and dry food items which will be handed over to Carlisle Foodbank volunteers this Friday during the Year 7 Assembly. These items will be used to support vulnerable members of the community over the coming weeks. Several hundred items have been donated.
Head of Year 7, Liz Barnsley said: “Our students have done an exceptional job collecting donations for the Carlisle Foodbank. This has provided a valuable opportunity for them to learn about Foodbanks, but also learn about those who are most vulnerable in our community and the difficulties they face. They have really engaged with this opportunity and their donations will help many people in the coming weeks.”
Rachel Rodway from Carlisle Foodbank said: “The Foodbank regularly gives food parcels to nearly 500 people a month, a third of whom are children. The parcels are designed to provide enough food for three meals a day for three days. Thus we need a large and regulation supply of long life food. We are immensely grateful to school students who give us their harvest festival donations. Without these we would be unable to meet our commitments and we could not help the most vulnerable people in Carlisle.”
