[O]pening hours at Millom’s Household Waste Recycling Centre, Red Hills, will be extended to make it easier people affected by flooding to dispose of damaged items.
The site will now open seven days a week, from 8am to 4pm, until further notice. In addition, the usual permit system will be relaxed to allow householders to use larger vehicles to clear items. The council is also working to have skips placed in affected areas.
Members of the public affected by the flooding, who will be making an insurance claim, are strongly advised to speak to their insurance company prior to the disposal of any flood damaged items. Insurance companies usually wish to inspect the damage as part of any claim.
A spokesperson for Cumbria County Council, said: “We’re taking this step to try and make life a little bit easier for people. There is likely to be a lot of people trying to use the site so please be patient and make sure you speak to your insures before you dispose of anything.”
Copeland Council will collect bulky items from flood affected properties free of charge. Request this service on 01946 598300 or [email protected]
Trudy Harrison MP said: “Despite only arriving in Manchester for the Conservative Conference last night I have decided to head back home to focus on the Millom recovery phase.
“I saw for myself the devastation and being a previous flood victim I know only too well how residents must be feeling. I woke this morning and the people of Millom were my first thought, I have spent most of the morning on the phone coordinating and offering assistance wherever required – my dad and office staff are currently out helping and I’ll be joining as soon as my train arrives back into Copeland.

“The multi-agency response continues to work well and once again my thanks goes to the exceptional support from across the county and the phenomenal community spirit.”
