[S]ue Hayman, Member of Parliament for Workington and Co-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Nuclear Energy, has today welcomed the news that the Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco) has been confirmed as the preferred bidder to acquire West Cumbrian nuclear power station builder NuGen from Toshiba.

Sue said: “I’m very pleased that we’ve now had the confirmation that Kepco are the preferred bidder to take over NuGen, which is a very welcome move to secure the future of the vital Moorside nuclear power station in West Cumbria. Kepco have a proven track record of nuclear reactors across the world.

“It’s a major boost for Cumbria and our nuclear sector, and will bring unprecedented levels of investment for our community, as well as providing thousands of jobs. Nuclear is vital to our future energy security and is key to a low-carbon future.

“I’m sure the whole community in West Cumbria will welcome this news, which is a huge vote of confidence in our position as a leading centre for nuclear excellence, not only in Britain, but in the world.”
