Carlisle Magistrates Court

[A] project director working for the collapsed construction company Carillion, got more bad news today after pleading guilty to two-speeding offences, he was fined in total £946.00 with court costs totalling £148.

Magistrates in Carlisle heard how Paul Crossland, 51, was driving his Mitsubishi car eastbound on the A66 at Kirkby Thore on June 17, 2017. That section of road has a speed limit of 40mph, he was doing 50.

Then on June 22 on the same road this time travelling at 56mph, towards his home at Darnborough Gate, Ripon in North Yorkshire.

The court was told Crossland already has six-penalty-points on his licence from previous speeding offences.

His lawyer Chris Toms asked the magistrates that his client make an application for an exceptional case to be heard, [not to be banned] this was granted, the court was informed that Mr Crossland “works for the company in the news at the moment Carillion” he works mainly as a project director at the RAF, Ministry of Defence site at Spadeadam near Brampton in Cumbria, working on behalf of Carillion, and doesn’t expect to be working or getting paid after the end of this month, he was travelling to his home in Ripon from the Cumbrian site when the offences took place.

The magistrates were told he has household expenses and a family to help support, if he lost his licence he will be a “totter” after today points are added to his licence, the limit before a possible disqualification is 12-points, if banned today [Thurs] he would have problems getting another job which involves driving, as there is no certainty of keeping his job with Carillion.

After taking the mitigation into account, the justices agreed they would accept the exceptional hardship case and he would not be banned, but, for exceeding the speed limit and travelling at 50mph he would be fined £315 and for the speed offence five-days later doing 56mph a fine of £631, with court costs the total of £1,094.00 is payable to the court, Crossland agreed this would be paid within 21-days, 4-penalty points were added to his licence making a total of 13-penalty-points on his licence.
