[T]hanks to National Lottery players and the Prince’s Countryside Fund, Clapham-based charity Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust (YDMT) is looking for two countryside management apprentices.
The 18-month posts will start between April and July 2018, and apprentices will undertake work-based training and study for a diploma in Environmental Conservation. The posts are with the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority (YDNPA) and will be based at its workshop near Settle.
The posts are being offered through Stories in Stone, a scheme of conservation and community projects concentrated on the Ingleborough area. Hannah Rose, Stories in Stone administration officer, said: “YDMT has been offering apprenticeships, mainly to young people, for several years now. We are delighted to offer two more exciting opportunities, in partnership with the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority. Previous apprentices have gone on to forge successful careers in countryside management after their apprenticeship has been completed.”
Apprentices will also gain a range of certificated skills such as dry stone walling and chainsaw use. The scheme does not have an age restriction, but applicants must not already have a qualification in a similar field.
Kate Hilditch, YDNPA’s Area Manager (Southern Dales), said: “Apprentices will work alongside the YDNPA’s Rangers and get the chance to learn a variety of skills: everything from upland footpath maintenance to building stiles and gates on some of Yorkshire’s most popular rights of way. This is a great chance for those who like to work outdoors and are keen to develop a career in countryside management.”

Stories in Stone was developed by the Ingleborough Dales Landscape Partnership and is led by YDMT. The scheme is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and will enable people from all backgrounds and of all ages to learn about, enjoy and help manage the stunning limestone landscape around Ingleborough.
