Carlisle Crown Court

[A] MAN who sexually assaulted a woman in Carlisle city centre and then tried to grope another two days later has been told to expect a jail term.

Michael Francis McShane committed four separate crimes across different dates late last month.

When McShane, 61, appeared at the city’s crown court today (MON), he admitted attempting to sexual assault a female. He also admits he assaulted the same woman by beating, and that he breached a previously imposed sexual offences prevention order by being drunk and disorderly in public. All three offences took place at Carlisle’s Court Square on January 25.

At a previous magistrates’ court hearing, McShane had pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a woman two days earlier, on January 23, in the city’s English Street.

McShane’s case was adjourned by Judge James Adkin until Friday this week, when sentence will be passed.

Attempts would be made in the meantime, the court heard, to obtain more details about the defendant’s bid to conquer alcoholism.

McShane, of Aglionby Street, Carlisle, was remanded in custody in the meantime. Judge Adkin told him: “You should expect a custodial sentence.”
