Firefighters remained at a Cumbrian castle yesterday following a major blaze on Wednesday.
Yesterday, Lazonby Fire Station was called to Armathwaite Castle, near Carlisle, at around 7.35pm.
It said: “The crew were first in attendance and quickly assessed that a large historical building had a fire in the roof over a substantial portion of the property.
“Immediately we requested more Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service resources.
“While the initial attack was in progress portable pumps were set up in to the River Eden, close to the property which allowed up to 10 firefighting jets to tackle the blaze.
“Due to concerns about the structure and fire, crews prioritised attacking the fire from the external grounds.
“The incident was protracted and involved over 15 crews including reliefs. Our high volume pump from Kendal was also requested and used to supply more water.
“After approximately seven hours of firefighting the blaze was brought under control.
“This was a large incident and involved over 50 personnel in total.
“The property is still being monitored by our crews and we were in Armathwaite over the weekend offering home fire safety visits.”
