[C]umberland FA is pleased to announce that it has established a safeguarding agreement with Northumberland FA, which will see Welfare Officer, Gill Shields, become able to assist both organisations on all safeguarding and welfare matters on a full-time basis.
Ben Snowdon, Cumberland FA Chief Executive Officer, said: “The FA has recently set out a new framework – Safeguarding Operating Standards (SOS) – which it hopes will provide consistent and clear responsibilities with regards to the delivery of safeguarding across grassroots football by County FAs.
“The Standard is intended to support the County FA in meeting our responsibilities, in relation to the youth football we oversee. It is underpinned by guidance from the government, Sport England and the NSPCC, in alignment with the National Standards for safeguarding and protecting children in sport.
“I think there is currently an even greater recognition that everyone working or volunteering within the grassroots game must play their part in ensuring that football is safe and enjoyable for all, and as an organisation, we have delegated responsibility for connecting, supporting and developing the game within Cumberland.
“Through this innovative partnership with Northumberland FA, we will have access to a Designated Safeguarding Officer five days a week. Consequently, we will not only be in a better position to meet the FA SOS, but will be providing an increased and improved safeguarding support service to our member clubs and sanctioned leagues.”
John Ackerley, Northumberland FA Chief Executive Officer, added: “Here at Northumberland FA we believe that safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility, and have procedures in place to ensure that the game remains as safe and enjoyable as possible for all those who wish to participate.
“Through this new agreement with Cumberland FA, we’ll be able to offer a greater flexibility of safeguarding provision, and importantly, an enhanced service – as Gill will be contactable over five days a week for both organisations.”
