Whitehaven and The Beacon Museum and Portal roll out a welcome for The Pelican

[T]o welcome tall ship The Pelican to Whitehaven, The Beacon Museum and Portal will be holding a series of family events, coupled with some additional local and charity stalls on Whitehaven Market.

Running from Friday to Monday, attractions will include pirates, an Easter egg hunt, face painting, music and storytelling – alongside the chance to take a free tour of The Pelican itself.

Alan Irwin, The Beacon Museum’s Business Development Manager, said: “The Beacon Museum has a packed Easter weekend schedule and we are looking forward to collaborating with Disruptieve in offering something extra for visitors to the harbour over coming days. A fabulous new Pirates exhibition featuring costumes and props from all your favourite films, and the best of local performers, means that this is as good a reason as any to rediscover Whitehaven harbour this Easter.”

Apart from being a stunning tall ship, The Pelican has a role to play in the community, by offering opportunities for people to develop their personal skills, confidence, and get ready for work or training, as part of a programme managed by charity, Adventure Under Sail – where sailing is part of the package, along with learning as part of a team.

Mike Starkie, Copeland Mayor, said: “The Pelican choosing to make Whitehaven its home port is a a major coup for the town, and I know it will be a popular addition to our tourist offer.

“But in addition to being a great attraction, it will offer unique training experiences for local young people, who will spend time aboard the ship and on land, learning key life skills in a fun and encouraging environment.”

The Pelican will be open for free tours from Friday to Monday, from 11am to 3pm, and it will be a first come, first service.

As the ship is operated by a charity, any donations will be welcomed, to help support the costs of providing the training and ongoing maintenance.

For more information about The Beacon Museum and events, please telephone 01946 592302 or visit www.thebracon-whitehaven.co.uk Please note, some events require prior booking.
