[A] national shortage of sonographers and an investigation of how experienced radiographers report domestic abuse of the elderly are among six papers emerging from the University of Cumbria’s Medical and Sport Sciences department, accepted for presentation at this summer’s UK Radiological and Radiation Oncology Congress (UKRCO) in Liverpool.
“Annually 40 million medical imaging tests are conducted in the English National Health Service alone and while the technical aspects of these procedures are important there’s a wide range of social and psychological concerns that affect clinicians, patients and educators,” Dr Paul Miller, senior lecturer in research methods and social psychology at the University of Cumbria, said.
Dr Miller and his colleagues work within the Social Issues in Medical Imaging (SIMI) research group based at the university. A set of national and international academics and clinicians, the group has a growing reputation for conducting relevant, timely research that considers everyday practice as well as clinician and patient wellbeing.
The UKRCO conference follows last years’ event in Manchester at which the University of Cumbria had nine papers accepted and attracted support and interest during an event billed as the ‘who’s who’ of the radiological world.
“This is an opportunity to showcase the work we do at the University of Cumbria before an international audience, and it’s heartening that the work here is getting the recognition it deserves,” Dr Miller added.
