Carlisle Cathedral

[M]embers of the public, NHS staff and patients are all invited to give thanks for our National Health Service, one of the nation’s most loved institutions.

To celebrate the 70th birthday of the NHS, a service of thanksgiving and celebration will be held at Carlisle Cathedral on the evening of Sunday 1st July.

The celebration will bring together a procession of staff representing the many different elements of the NHS and its partner organisations that work together to deliver health and social care to the people of Cumbria.

The Bishop of Carlisle James Newcome will preach, with readings from NHS staff past and present. The service will reflect on the history of the NHS, celebrate our staff, and look towards the future.

Dean, Mark Boyling, said: “It is hard to think of anyone who is not touched in some way by an aspect of the National Health Service. So it is good to be able to invite people from across the county to come to the Cathedral for this special celebration. We have a lot to be thankful for.”

Everyone is invited to come along from 5.30pm for tea and coffee, with the service to take place from 6.30-7.30pm.

Seating will be available on a first come first served basis.

The Cathedral service is one of a series of events taking place to celebrate the 70th year of the NHS:

  • Unison and the NHS are hosting an event in Carlisle City Centre on Saturday 7th July from 10am – 2pm. Come along and join us to find out more about your local services, career opportunities and how you can improve your health.
  • Cumbria Health on Call will be lighting up the Hilltop Heights building blue to mark the occasion.
  • NHS staff across Cumbria will be celebrating with cake on the 5th July with Big 7tea parties.
  • Carlisle’s Archive Centre at Lady Gillford`s House is holding an informal drop in session on Tuesday 3rd July for members of the public who have an interest in local history – records and photographs will be available from local hospitals including the Cumberland Infirmary and the former Garlands Asylum, Blencathra Sanatorium, Carlisle City General and City Maternity hospitals. More details will be available on the Cumbria County Council website.
