Carlisle Crown Court

[A] MAN found carrying a large kitchen knife in Whitehaven town centre has been jailed for six months.

Stuart Anthony Barrow phoned the emergency services on the evening of May 3 from Lowther Street. The 31-year-old reported he was in a “bad place” with his mental health, felt suicidal and had possession of a knife.

Police attended, handcuffed Barrow and recovered the 10-inch tool – which had a four-inch blade – from a carrier bag.

He admitted having a bladed article in public – his second such recent crime, having possessed a meat cleaver at Whitehaven’s Duke Street in December.

Barrow, of Bankside, Distington, Workington, was jailed for his latest offence at Carlisle Crown Court earlier today (TUES).

Recorder Mark Ainsworth spoke of “disquiet” within society “about people who take knives on to the streets”. He told Barrow: “That concern… must be reflected by the courts with the sentences that courts impose.”
