[T]alented young musicians have raised hundreds of pounds to support Jo’s Appeal, Ostley House’s Sight Loss and Dementia Village and brain tumour research at a charity concert.

Barrow Sixth Form College, the Rating Lane campus of Furness College, held the event last month for students and friends.

The summer concert featured a range of performances – from classical pieces by Handel to more contemporary musical numbers – with vocal, piano and instrumental items.

Sheila Fawcett, who organised the concert, said it had been an uplifting occasion.

“It was a great concert and we’re delighted to raise money for such worthy causes,” she said. “The summer concert offers a platform for young students to perform while fundraising for local good causes.”

Representatives from Jo’s Appeal and Ostley House received their donations on Thursday 16th August during a day of celebration at Barrow Sixth Form College as students were given their A Level results.

Rebecca Williams, who received her A Level in Music on the day, presented the donations alongside Sheila and Head of Sixth Form Mark Nicholson.

Rebecca said: “I’ve been interested in performing from a young age and was pleased to take part in the summer concert.

“The event is a fantastic way to give back to the community and support local charities and good causes.”

Jo’s Appeal was set up in honour of popular local journalist Jo Davies, who died in August 2015. It raises money for Furness Oncology, St Mary’s Hospice and the Eve Appeal – a national charity which funds research into gynaecological cancers.

Ostley House, a residential home for the blind in Barrow, is fundraising for a purpose-build dementia and sight loss village to provide a safe environment for those with both Alzheimer’s disease and sight problems.
