Over a thousand students will pass through nine graduation ceremonies at Carlisle Cathedral.

Over thousand students watched by two thousand six hundred well-wishers are due in Carlisle this week as the city hosts the University of Cumbria’s winter graduation ceremony.

On Tuesday students of health, psychology and social studies along with nursing, health and professional practice graduated with three services held at Carlisle Cathedral.

University Chancellor Dr John Sentamu told graduates he was proud to be part of ‘the family’ of the university and urged students to keep in touch to share news of their future successes. The university’s ‘Voces UoC’ choir guided by professor of practice Valerie Reid performed during each ceremony.

Wednesday will see graduates from the Institute of the Arts receive their awards alongside students of science, natural resources and outdoor studies.

Broadcaster and journalist Fiona Armstrong will receive an honorary fellowship on Wednesday morning in recognition of her lifelong and outstanding contribution to the media industry.

In the afternoon business, law and social sciences students will be rewarded for years of hard work.

On Thursday the Institute of Education will confer awards on students from Cumbria, Lancashire and the university’s London campus.

The graduation celebrations are infectious with businesses in the city offering discounts and special offers as part of a collaboration with Carlisle City Council and the Carlisle Partnership.

Over 40,000 students have now graduated from the university which last year celebrated its’ tenth anniversary.
