On Monday 10th December The Dalemain World’s Original Marmalade Awards were delighted to present key beneficiary Hospice at Home Carlisle and the North Lakeland with a cheque for £18,140 raised by the Homemade Marmalade Awards in 2018, taking the total amount raised for the Carlisle charity by the Awards in the past year to £22,234.08.

The Awards have also raised funds around the UK with over 40 other hospice charities receiving donations this year and further funds generated around the globe. With tens of thousands of marmalade entries winging their way to Dalemain since the inception of the Awards in 2005, Dalemain has now raised nearly £250,000 for palliative care both in the UK and abroad.

Dr Alison Miles, Chair of Trustees at Hospice at Home said “On behalf of the Charity I would like to thank Mrs. Hasell-McCosh and the team at Dalemain for their long standing support. Each year the iconic Marmalade Festival raises significant funds for palliative care, of which Hospice at Home has gratefully been the main beneficiary.

“It is with thanks to this magnificent level of generosity and support that Hospice at Home can continue to provide vital hospice care free of charge to patients and their families, making a huge difference in our local community.”

Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland will also receive a donation in the region of £2,000 at the 2019 Marmalade Festival from Fortnum & Mason for sales of the 2018 winning marmalade, a zingy Grapefruit & Gin recipe made by Janice Miners in Cornwall.

Jane Hasell-McCosh, founder of the Awards said “We are so delighted that the Awards have raised such a huge amount of money in 2018. It is all thanks to our fantastic team of volunteers and supporters, who are so dedicated and work so tirelessly to make the Awards and Festival such a success every year.

“Special thanks must be given to the Penrith Lions, who managed the parking for the 2018 Festival and kindly donated their fee to Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland. We hope to raise even more for hospice care in 2019, and look forward to another wonderful year of marmalade making!”

The competition is now open for 2019 and as always the full homemade entry fee will go to hospice charities. Organisers are hoping for record numbers of jars, with exciting competitions including the ‘Thursday Cottage Commonwealth Competition’, which is on the hunt for inventive flavours from around the Commonwealth, and ‘Marmalade on the Move’, a category for all of the postal workers, delivery drivers and taxis that get the jars and entrants safely to Dalemain.

“The deadline for the competition is Friday 8th February 2019, so jars should be sent to Dalemain in plenty of time! New judges for 2019 will include the winner of eviivo’s ‘Tastiest Breakfast Award’, Janette Likeman from Cockermouth, who will be helping to select the best B&B entries.

The 2019 Marmalade Festival will take place at Dalemain Mansion on Saturday 16th March. It promises to be a golden day for citrus lovers, and there will be stalls, activities, lectures and workshops, with all of the entries displayed in the state rooms and hundreds of artisan marmalades available to taste and buy.
