
Drivers are warned there will be overnight road closures of the M6 next month as work continues on bridge repairs.
National Highways is carrying out extensive repairs on Lowther Bridge, near Penrith, to extend its life for many years to come.
It is now over 50 years old and work includes replacing the bridge’s expansion joints, waterproofing the bridge decks, improving drainage and resurfacing.
It said it expected to finish installing permanent expansion joints by the end of August.
The following overnight road closures are planned in both directions on the M6 between Junction 39 at Shap and Junction 40 at Penrith on:
- Saturday August 8 and Sunday August 9
- Saturday August 15 and Sunday August 16
- Saturday August 22 and Sunday August 23
The section of road will be closed between 10pm and 6am.
Diversion routes will be in place via the A6.
