THE FUTURE is bright for Copeland pupils as they graduate from innovative scheme.
Pupils from West Lakes Academy and Whitehaven Academy have graduated from the Future Pathways programme run by Copeland Hub, and sponsored by Morgan Sindall Construction and Infrastructure.
The students have undertaken a 10-week programme which aims to prepare them for the future by teaching them skills through activities such as canoeing, rock climbing, bush craft and archery, alongside confidence-building and team-building exercises.
As part of the programme, the students from West Lakes Academy organised a citizenship day involving the pupils tidying up Castle Mount care home in Egremont. The group gathered together to pick litter, clear out a garage, bake cakes and play games with the residents.
A student from the programme said: “During the weeks we have learned how to work better in a team and have more confidence in talking to people.”
Another student said: “We know working in a team is a lot easier than working by our self. We also now find it easier to ask for help when it’s needed!”
The students from Whitehaven Academy visited St Peter’s Community Hall, Whitehaven and spent the day with visitors to the Age UK day centre.
Mike Starkie, Mayor of Copeland presented the pupils at West Lakes Academy with their certificates. He said: “I was delighted to have been asked to present the awards to these students who have shown a remarkable level of maturity and progression throughout the programme.
“It was clear to see that the pupils have a lot to offer society and the skills and knowledge that they have picked up though the scheme will benefit them now and in years to come.
“I wish them all the best of luck in their futures.”
Gillian Johnston, Community Engagement Advisor at Morgan Sindall Construction and Infrastructure, said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed the past 10 weeks working with these young people and I am immensely proud of the achievements of each and every one of them.
“The aim of the program is to inspire, raise aspirations, encourage relationship management, social awareness and critical thinking whilst taking the young people out of their comfort zone and having fun.”
Copeland Hub is a partnership created by Copeland Borough Council and Cumbria Constabulary, and supported by the Police and Crime Commissioner, which works together with partner agencies to tackle anti-social behaviour and organise community projects.
The Hub has expanded its role from bringing agencies together to tackle issues, to proactively organising activities and projects for the benefit of the community. This includes the Future Pathways scheme.
