FC United (of Manchester) 3 – 0 Penrith AFC Ladies

Penrith went out of this seasons North West Regional League Cup at the Quarter Final stage as they came up against a formidable FC United team. FC United have won this Cup for the last 2 years and appear intent on repeating the achievement for a 3rd season.

With no fewer than 8 players unavailable, Penrith’s squad was stretched. Youngsters Bea Jackson and Jodie English made the step up from the clubs Development team as did Development captain Tasha Scott.

Penrith had their hands full as they tried to contain a lively FC United team whose free flowing and expansive passing game often stretched the Penrith defence to its limits. Keeper Hope Lawson was busy early on as she produced a string of fine saves.

FC United deservedly took the lead on 17 mins with an unstoppable strike into the top corner from 25 metres.

To their credit Penrith stuck to their game plan and remained compact, frustrating the FC United team. On the counter attack Penrith to threatened on occasions.

FC United made it 2-0 on 35 mins when Penrith failed to clear a corner and in the scramble United fired home.

On the stroke of half time FC United made it 3-0 with a floated cross to the back post.

Ht 3-0

Into the 2nd half FC United started brightly and had three good chances in the first 5 mins. But after weathering that period Penrith’s compact formation proved effective at limiting FC United’s chances.

The game ultimately ended early in the 80th minute when Penrith Player Livvy Johnston was injured in a collision with the FC United keeper and required medical attention.

Good luck to FC United in the Semi Final after a deserved victory but plenty of positives for a young Penrith AFC Ladies team.

FT 3-0

This Sunday Penrith return to league action as they travel to face Fleetwood Town.

Penrith: Lawson, Johnston, Alderson, Jackson, McCormick, Scott, Hopton, Ullyart, English, Buchanan, Coulthard.
