Two events on the subject of dementia are being hosted by University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT) and all are welcome to attend.
The first ‘Dementia Talk’ will be held at 6pm on Monday, 13 May, at Lancaster Town Hall and the second will take place at 6pm on Monday, 10 June, at The Forum in Barrow.
Dianne Smith, Matron for Professional Standards in Dementia for UHMBT, will give the informative talks and is eager to share the work that the Trust and its partners are doing to improve care for people living with dementia.
Speaking from her vast experience, Dianne will present an overview of dementia, including the signs, symptoms, types and stages.
Audience members will get an insight into the prevalence of dementia, both locally and nationally, as well as an outline of national strategies and the NHS Long Term Plan. There will also be a closer look at community initiatives and local health provision.
Dianne, who is involved in local ‘dementia hubs’ (support services) in the community, says early intervention can help people to maintain their independence.
Dianne said: “At UHMBT we want to ensure that people with dementia stay healthy, thereby preventing hospital admissions wherever possible. In my talks I will be sharing as much information as possible on the care and support available to people with dementia and their family and friends. If anyone is interested they can sign up and come along. Everyone is welcome.”
Dementia is a collection of symptoms caused by conditions which affect the brain. It affects a person’s mental abilities such as memory and thinking. The most common cause of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease.
Dianne added that a great deal of support is available and that people with dementia and their carers can cope with it more easily if they know where to find services and information.
