University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT) is hosting a series of talks on Emergency Planning.

Stuart Hosking-Durn, Head of Resilience and Patient Flow, UHMBT, will lead a presentation on ‘Hazmat incidents’ which are where people may have been exposed to substances hazardous to health. People will also be able to look at hazmat suits (hazardous materials suits).

Following the talks there will be optional tours of the new decontamination units which have been installed at Furness General Hospital and at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

The ‘Preparing for the Worst’ talks will take place on:

  • Thursday 20 June, 6pm – 8pm, Lecture Theatre, Royal Lancaster Infirmary, Lancaster
  • Tuesday 25 June, 6pm-8pm, Boardroom, Near Trust HQ, Westmorland General Hospital
  • Tuesday 3 July, 6pm-8pm, Lecture Theatre, Near the Dining Room, Level 3, Furness General Hospital, Barrow.

Stuart Hosking-Durn said: “As we have seen in recent years the threats to the public are changing, not only through terrorism, but incidents such as the use of corrosive substances to harm others.

“The talks are a fantastic way of the public seeing how the Trust prepares and responds to a Hazmat incident, how we ensure the safety of our staff and the rapid treatment of patients to minimize harm and save lives.”

The NHS has a duty under the Civil Contingencies Act 2004 to be prepared for a wide range of incidents as part of the Emergency Preparedness, Resilience and Response (EPRR) programme.
