St Benedict’s Students at Gateshead Athletics Stadium

Students from St Benedict’s School have had an impressive weekend whilst competing at the Northern Schools’ Track & Field Championships in Gateshead.

Schools from all the Northern Counties took part in the event on Saturday with schools from Cleveland, Durham and Northumberland as well as Cumbria.

Six students in total travelled from St Benedict’s to represent both Copeland and Cumbria at the competition. They had all came either first or second in the County Championships to qualify, with the top two representing Cumbria.

Aaron Holliday came first in the hammer and now qualifies for the English Schools competition in July. Aaron has previously been crowned World Champion having took part in the ‘World Hammer Decathlon Championships’ in October 2018. He is part of Copeland Athletics Club, and competes for Team North Cumbria, as well as Cumbria Schools.

Dylan Robinson and Bethan Parr both came third in the Javelin event.

Eve Riley (County Champion), Ebony Blackwell and Finlay Starkie (County Champion) all also had great runs in the 800m.

Miss Powe, Head of PE at St Benedict’s School accompanied the students to the event in Gateshead and commented:

“Our students all gave 100% while wearing the Cumbria Vest. This is a great achievement for them all, well done.”
