A new walking route, which forms part of the iconic Ullswater Way has recently been launched.

Known as the Lowther Castle Loop, the new route is a 7.5 mile circular walk which begins and ends at Lowther Castle and includes points of interest such as the Cop Stone, Askham Hall and the picturesque village of Helton.

Walkers can enjoy all of this and the beautiful scenery, have a picnic along the way or have tea and scones back in the café at Lowther Castle. This launch is the result of a six month joint project between Lowther Estates and the Lake District National Park Authority using existing rights of way to create an attractive and well-signposted circular route.

Jim Lowther, owner of Lowther Castle and a keen outdoor enthusiast, said “Last year, we introduced a number of cycle trails to Lowther Park and the wider estate. We are now really pleased to be working with the Lake District National Park on our joint aim to help develop sustainable tourism by promoting this walking route, linking the Ullswater Way to Lowther Castle.”

Suzy Hankin Area Ranger for the Lake District National Park Authority said: “This is a fantastic walk in its own right but also leads to the main Ullswater Way route. People can park for free at Lowther Castle, get out of their cars and enjoy the beautiful scenery in the Lowther valley on a well signed and easy to follow route and we are delighted to have been involved in this project.“

This new walk now features in the Ullswater Way official guide which is available to buy at the Lowther Castle Shop for £5.
