Council submits plans for new housing in Keswick

Steps to address a shortage in affordable rented accommodation in Keswick have been taken by Allerdale Borough Council with plans submitted to convert an empty shop into housing.

The Council has put forward plans to change a former retail unit at 18 Otley Road into four one-bedroom apartments. Two will be situated on the ground floor and two on the first floor.

The scheme has been developed after it was recognised by the Council, following representations from businesses, that there is a shortfall of affordable accommodation in the town, in particular for local workers in the tourism industry.

The tourism industry is a vital part of Keswick and Allerdale’s economy and the Council is committed to helping to address the housing need.

If planning approval is granted, a number of alterations which will compliment the building will be made internally and externally. These include the replacement of the flat roof extension, works to the gable and replacement of the palisade fencing with domestic railings and walls.

The limited works will help bring an empty building back into use and provide much-needed housing for the town.

The building, which is owned by the Council, has sat empty for several years but has previously been used as a bike shop and gas showroom.

Stephen Stoddart, Allerdale Executive member for housing, health and wellbeing, said: “Providing suitable housing for everyone in Allerdale is of crucial importance to this Council. This scheme, should it be granted planning approval, will help address a specific housing need in Keswick and help local people and workers find accommodation.

“The development also has the added bonus of bringing a long-standing empty property back into use and keeping this wonderful town centre looking its best.”

The planning application will be available to view on the Lake District National Park’s website.
