Free parking after 3pm, seven days a week, continues to be available in three Carlisle City Council car parks and will soon be extended to more car parks on Late Night Thursdays.

The Free after 3pm scheme aims to support high street businesses in Carlisle by encouraging more visitors to park-up and discover the many city centre attractions, shops and places to eat.

The pilot scheme started on Thursday 1 August 2019 and will run until the end of March 2020. It provides around 1,000 free car parking spaces after 3pm in Caldew Riverside; Castle; and Viaduct car parks for all permitted vehicles.

On the build-up to Christmas the scheme will be extended to include other city centre car parks on Late Night Thursdays.

Free parking after 3pm will be available on the following Thursdays: 21 and 28 November and 5, 12 and 19 December in the following city centre car parks: Bitts Park; Caldew Riverside; Castle; Civic Centre; Lowther Street; Paddy’s Market; The Sands Centre; Viaduct and West Walls.

Carlisle City Cllr Nigel Christian, Portfolio holder for Environment and Transport, said: “Our Free after Three parking scheme will be extended to include even more city centre car parks on Late Night Thursdays. We want to encourage shoppers to come to Carlisle and sample the many attractions we have available within the city centre.

“Our city is a great place to visit over the festive period and the free parking after 3pm incentive is another reason to choose Carlisle as your Christmas shopping venue.”
