Sections of the A66 between Workington and Cockermouth in Cumbria will close for five nights from next week to help finish a roundabout improvement project ahead of the Christmas holiday period.
Highways England is improving Fitz and Great Clifton roundabouts in a project which is due to be finished next spring. Work at Great Clifton is now due to finish on Friday 20 December with the project moving across to Fitz roundabout near Cockermouth in the new year.
To help complete the improvement at Great Clifton roundabout, where the A66 meets the A595, five overnight closures will take place between Friday 13 December and Wednesday 18 December. The 8pm to 6am overnight work includes closing:
- the A66, including Stainburn bypass, between Stainburn roundabout and Brigham and Broughton junction
- the A595 from Great Clifton roundabout to Bridgefoot junction
- and the C2069 (Main Road) from Great Clifton roundabout to the crossroads in Great Clifton
During the closures the main diversion will operate between Lillyhall, Workington, Maryport and Cockermouth using the A596, A594 and A595.
Local diversions will also be in place with arrangements also in hand for residential access and access to bus services between Great Clifton and Stainburn.
