Listeners in Cumbria and Morecambe Bay will soon be able to tune in to a broad range of new local digital radio stations, Ofcom confirmed today.
Ofcom have awarded two 12-year licences for new local radio multiplexes for areas in Cumbria and Morecambe Bay. A multiplex is the means by which DAB digital radio stations are broadcast.
The successful applicants are Bauer Digital Radio Limited and MuxCo Cumbria Limited.
Bauer will cover North and West Cumbria including Carlisle, Penrith, Workington, Whitehaven and Keswick.
MuxCo will cover Morecambe Bay, including Morecambe, Lancaster, Ulverston, Kendal and Windermere.
These awards will bring local digital radio services to these areas for the first time, with 20 new digital stations launching next year. Both multiplex services will also transmit BBC Radio Cumbria.
More detail on our assessment of Bauer Digital Radio’s and MuxCo Cumbria’s successful applications is available.
