L-R: Matt Davies (Jo’s husband), Norma Halpin (Jo’s mum), Jayne Bickerstaff (Oncology Unit Manger), Heidi Bowron (Bay Hospitals Charity), Alison Alger (St Mary’s Hospice)

This month the ovarian cancer charity ‘Jo’s Appeal’ have generously presented cheques of £2,500 each to St Mary’s Hospice, and to Bay Hospitals Charity, for the Oncology Unit at Furness General Hospital.

Jo’s Appeal was established just over four and a half years ago in memory of Jo Davies, the popular Barrow journalist who sadly died of ovarian cancer aged only 38. Jo’s husband Matt Davies presented the cheques to the local charities this month, bringing the total that Jo’s Appeal has donated to the two good causes to £20,000.

Matt said, “Furness General Hospital Oncology Unit and St Mary’s Hospice provide an absolutely vital service helping thousands of cancer patients and supporting their families. They carry out their work in a dedicated and professional manner in what are challenging times for the healthcare sector.

“Their efforts are really appreciated by everyone in the community and it is an honour for Norma, me and the rest of the Jo’s Appeal team to continue supporting Bay Hospitals Charity and St Mary’s Hospice.”

Jayne Bickerstaff, Ward Manager at the Oncology Unit, said “We are so grateful to people like Matt who dedicate their time raising funds for the Unit. We are very fortunate for the donations which are used to purchase equipment and supplies used for patients receiving treatment.”

Bay Hospitals Charity is a registered charity which raises money to improve patient care and the hospital and community experience across University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust. By donating to Bay Hospitals Charity you can fund the latest equipment and help make your local hospitals more comfortable, ensuring you and your loved ones get the best possible care and treatment.
