An exciting community hub providing a new home for a wide range of council services is to be created at Ormsgill in Barrow.

The new hub will be based at the Ormsgill children’s centre which will undergo extensive redevelopment work over the coming months to create community facilities.

Cumbria County Council is investing approximately £175,000 in this exciting project which will bring together a number of county council services as well as providing a community centre and facilities that can be shared by health and other partner organisations.

Roland Hill Ltd has been appointed as the main contractor for the redevelopment works which will transform the children’s centre into a community hub. Works are scheduled to start on site in late January 2020 and should be completed in late Spring 2020.

Cllr Deborah Earl, Cumbria County Council Cabinet member for Community Services, said: “I’m really excited about our plans for a new hub for Ormsgill residents – it’s a great example of how the county council is committed to supporting our local communities. The hub will allow us to bring all our council services together under one roof locally for the first time and improve the council’s offer available to people in Ormsgill. This approach will also support the Council in its service delivery and strengthen closer working with our partners such as health and the police.”

Cllr Bill McEwan, Cumbria County Council Local Member for Ormsgill, said: “A lot of time and effort has gone into planning the new hub, and I’m thrilled that the building work will be starting shortly. The new hub will provide a range of community services such as community learning opportunities, youth centre and library service. Local residents will continue to be able to access our children’s services currently provided through the children’s centre as well as health services and the Police.”
